Making Cough Syrup

Because, naturally, everyone is coughing the past couple of days.

This morning, I ran across a link in my Facebook feed to The Coconut Mama and her Honey and Lemon Cough Syrup with Coconut Oil.

And I thought... we have all of that.  We need to try it.

Once I got started, I realized.... this is all Bountiful Baskets

With so many of us, I figured I'd double the recipe right off the bat.  Pretty easy:
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
  • 3/8 cup lemon juice
Put it all into a saucepan, heat until the coconut oil melts, and either take just as syrup, or add to hot water or tea.

From start to finish (pulling ingredients out to drinking some syrup myself) took me about five minutes.

After making this up, one thing I'll do for my next batch is to add about a tablespoon more of honey.  Because honey has a lot of great things going for it, and chief among those is that it will make the lemon juice go down a bit more easily for my youngest two.

Go read what Coconut Mama has to say about all the benefits of these ingredients...

About twelve thumbs up here. At least, once we made it a bit sweeter.

I will let you know!

So far, it was certainly drinkable. :)

Not much more to say than that yet. LOL

Can you store it or is it a take as soon as you make it kind of thing?

Shanna -- I suspect we'll go through it all today, between us. But I think you could store it and reheat it (to re-melt the coconut oil) pretty easily. I'm thinking I may make a bigger batch and put it in a canning jar in my fridge...

Every time I read a mention of Bountiful Baskets, I've checked to see if it was in our area yet. Today, I find a site within driving distance! Hurrah!

Did you really get coconut oil and honey in your Bountiful Basket? I'm excited to see how this program works. I've heard so many good things about it.

Thankfully, I have all the ingredients for your cough syrup on hand. I'm going to stir some up tonight for the coughing family members who are still getting over the flu. Thanks for sharing!

YAY! A Bountiful Baskets site nearby is so exciting!

In addition to the baskets, they have add-ons every week. Various things. Sometimes a 40 lb box of apples, or a box of tomatoes, or 5 gallons of honey, or olive oil in big cans, or coconut oil, or a big bag of lentils. To name a few I've gone for in the past few months...

My advice with BB is that if you are disappointed with something at your site, try to casually find out if you got a fairly normal basket, or whatever.

Oh Debra,
I wish I knew about this earlier. I spent $10 on a powerful cough syrup earlier this week. :(

What we've done is to use this during the daytime, and we're still doing some sort of Nyquil-like thing at night.

I don't know how effective this is, but everyone likes that it tastes good and they feel better. I feel better knowing what is actually in it.

We have added honey and lemon to tea, but never tried coconut oil this way. I'll have to remember this next time one of us is sick.

You can store this for a month in the fridge.
