Amish Proverbs: Book Review and Giveaway!

About Amish Proverbs: Words of Wisdom from the Simple Life: Simplify your life with Amish wisdom

Through firsthand research and personal relationships, Suzanne Woods Fisher has collected more than 200 proverbs that uncover the rich heritage, folklore, faith, values, history, and essence of the Plain People. These proverbs serve as teaching tools and maxims for practical living--but they're not just for the Amish. They're for anyone who seeks God's wisdom and truth for everyday circumstances.

Ranging from the simple to the profound, from the serious to the humorous, these sayings will stick with you through life's joys and sorrows. With beautiful full-color photos throughout, Amish Proverbs is the perfect gift for any occasion.

About Suzanne Woods Fisher: Suzanne Woods Fisher is the CBA bestselling author of The Choice, The Waiting, Amish Peace, and Amish Proverbs. Her interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Old Order German Baptist Brethren Church in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine. Suzanne is the host of a radio show called Amish Wisdom and her work has appeared in many magazines. She lives in California.

My take:  What a delightful book!  Each of the eleven chapters opens with a short 'story' of about four pages, illustrating the concept of that chapter.  Concepts such as time, money, work ethic, etc.  That is followed by about a dozen pages, with beautiful photographs and wonderful little sayings.  All of it makes you think.  Some make you smile.  Some were familiar to me, but many were not.

I thought I'd highlight a favorite proverb from the book, but on nearly every page, I find myself thinking, "Oooh, that one is good!" and I just can't narrow it down.  So, rather than a favorite, let's just pull two from the chapter on Education and two from Children & Family.
  • Some read just enough to keep themselves misinformed.
  • It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.
  • Raising boys is as easy as digesting iron.
  • Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.
Aren't those great?

So how about you?  Do you have favorite family sayings?  Or a proverb from your cultural background?  If you want to share it here, that is one way to win your own copy of Amish Proverbs.  It does not have to be original!!

You can also get an entry by entering the Kindle Giveaway.  Come back and post to tell me you entered that giveaway!

For an additional entry, you can:
  • Follow me with Google Friend Connect, and leave a comment (if you already follow me, that's good for two entries)

This giveaway will close Sunday, August 29 at 11:59 p.m. MST.  I will email the winner and if I do not hear back, I will draw a new winner on Wednesday.  So please, make sure I can contact you!

I am trying to think of a proverb. "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Might as well take it from the book of the Bible called Proverbs.

Sounds like a wonderful book!

Here is what I used to hear but rarely do anymore.

In whatever direction you turn, you will see God coming to meet you; nothing is void of Him, He Himself fills all His work.
